Some Natural Remedies for an Upset Stomach

September 29, 2012 By Catherine Burdine

Expats and people who travel a lot are familiar with eating foods that may cause an upset stomach.  Foreign bacteria can cause all kinds of discomfort.  However, there are simple, natural cures you can try to soothe your upset stomach before heading to the pharmacy.

Nausea

The idea is to lessen the amount of acid in your stomach.  Bland foods that are low in fat like oatmeal, rice, bananas, a plain baked potato, plain pasta, crackers, pretzels or gingersnaps.   If you are able to keep liquids down, a mixture of baking soda and water can help to calm your stomach and keep you hydrated.   Mix a half of glass of water with a half a tsp. of baking soda and drink slowly.  Peppermint, Anis and Ginger tea are also great for settling an upset stomach.  A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar will also counteract the amount of acid in your stomach.

Vomiting

You should not eat for an hour or two after you vomit.  After that, you should start by sipping clear liquids and eating ice chips. This will help replenish the water in your body to prevent dehydration.  When you do start eating again,  start with easily digestible foods such as crackers, gingersnaps or a glass of ginger ale.

Diarrhea

It’s important to stay hydrated and replace salts that are lost from diarrhea.  Clear broths, dry toast, pretzels, crackers and ginger ale are great for replacing these.  After a day or two, yogurt will help to replenish the good bacteria in your intestines that was probably lost.
